On a tour of the Gold Country, we were once lucky to have a private tour of the buildings at the North Bloomfield ghost town (close to Malakoff Diggings). This was taken in the saloon.
Mining was hard and the men spent what little was left of their pay after room & board trying to forget their dire condition through alcohol. Effectively giving back the hard earned money to their employer who was owning everything in town.
